State Rep.
John F. Moran
South End

State Representative John F. Moran has only been in office for 14 months, but he’s already become deeply involved with community action efforts in his district. Born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Moran cites his volunteer-oriented upbringing as a major reason why he chose to pursue a career in public service. Now, as the representative for the 9th Suffolk District, he serves 45,000 people spread across the South End, Back Bay, Roxbury, and Dorchester.
Shortly after being elected, Moran met with the director of ABCD’s South End Neighborhood Service Center to see what he could do to support ABCD’s work. Moran points out that his constituency is made up of some of the wealthiest and some of the poorest people in the Commonwealth. “My mission is to bridge the gap,” Moran says.
For Moran, that takes the form of both day-to-day community engagement and shaping policy. On the ground, he frequently puts in volunteer time across the district; last Thanksgiving he personally delivered turkeys to the Neighborhood Service Center and helped to hand them out. As a policymaker, Moran works tirelessly to uplift his district, whether that be connecting constituents to employment & training resources or supporting funding for education and maternal health.
Moran knows that his district is changing — much like in other cities, low-income residents are being forced out — but he feels hopeful for the future. “I want to ensure that every family in my district, no matter their background, can thrive,” he says.
