“If I can help somebody along the way then my living shall not be in vain. You got to always give back, and I learned that early on from my grandmother when I was growing up in Memphis, Tennessee.”
As a valued member of ABCD’s Dorchester Neighborhood Service Center Advisory Board, Ruth is committed to advocating for positive changes throughout Boston to support the elderly and youth.
Best described as the “Volunteer Queen,” Ruth connects to her community members mainly through her involvement with St. Angela Merici Church in Mattapan and St. Katharine Drexel Church in Dorchester. Along with being a youth group leader at St. Angela, Ruth also serves as a choir manager for the Boston Black Catholic Choir. Ruth has promoted awareness of health issues that affected her neighbors and friends through her passionate participation in Boston REACH 2010 Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition Women’s Health Demonstration Project.
Ruth continues to serve as a trusted and affective housing development advocate on behalf of her peers on the Mayor’s Advisory Council, which assists in developing and coordinating community-based systems of service for Boston elders. She also serves a community service volunteer for the AARP and is a Vice Grand Lady of the Knights of Saint Peter Claver Sister Delores Harrall Court 337.
