“I enjoy helping the Head Start children know how the real world is and how it works, getting them ready for kindergarten and for life. … I’d like to continue working with kids when I get older.”
Ricky began volunteering at ABCD Jamaica Plain Head Start in July 2016 when he was just 14 years old and now assists in a number of areas of the program, including mentoring new volunteers, and assisting at parent workshops by encouraging participation in activities to strengthen the home-school connection.
A senior at Boston Community Leadership Academy (BCLA) in Hyde Park, Ricky has impacted the lives of everyone in the Jamaica Plain Head Start program by being a consistent and positive male role model. He helps promote the Head Start program by stopping by a resource event, passing out flyers and talking with community members.
“The example Ricky sets has made our program stronger, more united, and more engaged in the community,” said Kim Weldon, the Education Supervisor at Jamaica Plain Head Start.
