“Our youth are going to be our future leaders and if want to be succeed we have to be there for them.”
Jeffrey, who grew up in a gang-infested neighborhood of Dorchester and lost close friends to street violence, is living his pledge to his community of giving area youth a better chance at living safer and more fulfilling lives.
Jeffrey, a Boston Police Officer, has starred in his role as Community Initiative Liaison for the department’s Bureau of Community Engagement. In that role, he created the “We Belong” program that empowers at-risk youth with education to strengthen their neighborhoods and promote community interests. The year-round program, invites industry leaders to speak with young people with the idea of inspiring students to excel in and out of the classroom. With ABCD’s support this past summer, the program was extended to included a six-week summer program that provided the participants with paid stipends.
Additionally, Jeffrey launched the “Lunch With A Cop” and “Tech Me to Fish” programs, two more youth outreach programs that provided city youth with instructions in basic things like cooking. Jeffrey’s community outreach efforts also includes working with juveniles and adults who are incarcerated in detention facilities and prisons and being a Big Brother for five years.
